It is a logarithmic relationship.
The best way to explain is this...
- If you put a coat of red paint on a barn, it looks red.
- If you put a second coat of red paint on the same barn, it looks redder.
- If you put a third coat of red paint on the barn, it looks redder, but not as much as the second coat.
- If you put a fourth coat of red paint on the bar, it looks slightly redder.
- If you put a fifth coat of red paint on the barn, you can't really tell the difference
